ZuriMED is located in the heart of Zürich in Switzerland as part of the Swiss health cluster. Surrounded by world-leading universities and orthopaedic healthcare institutes, we have a unique access to high-quality labs, testing facilities, and exceptionally educated talents.

The startup spun off from the University and ETH Zürich and is supported by the Balgrist Beteiligungs AG. Therefore, we can benefit from close collaborations with research groups and clinicians.

Xiang Li

CEO & Co-Founder
Xiang holds a degree of Dr. sc. ETH Zürich in Orthopaedic Biomechanics, with over 15 years of experience in medical engineering. Along with business development, he has developed a comprehensive knowledge base in finance, legal, quality, and management. With a robust entrepreneurial sense and a firm vision, he leads operations to grow the company, and fosters an incentivising work environment that encourages innovation and motivates the team to create value for the company.

Elias Bachmann

CTO & Co-Founder
After completing his biomedical engineering studies, Elias spent several years as a research fellow at the Laboratory of Orthopaedic Biomechanics, Balgrist University Hospital, and ETH Zürich. His journey led him to co-found ZuriMED Technologies AG, where he is now responsible for the technical direction, strategy and development.

Pol Banzet

Head of Development
With a background in Mechanical Engineering with an orientation in Biomechanics, Pol spent time in academia (Master's Thesis in Harvard's Biodesign Lab and research assistant at ETH's Computational Robotics Laboratory), before joining ZuriMED in 2020. He now supervises the development of multiple medical devices, from early research prototypes to industrialization and early lifecycle management.

Sascha Brun

Head of Active Devices Development
Sascha holds an MSc in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Robotics and Mechatronics, from ETH Zurich. He leads the development of powered devices at ZuriMED. After a traineeship at the Helbling Robotics Team and a research assistant position at the biomechanics lab, Sascha joined ZuriMED from the early days on.

Andrea Möhl

Head of Clinical Affairs
Andrea, Head of Clinical Affairs, holds an MSc in Health Science and Technology from ETH Zurich. She leads pre-clinical and clinical studies, playing a pivotal role in clinical evaluation processes. After a traineeship at DePuy Synthes and a research internship in the rehabilitation engineering field, Andrea joined ZuriMED for her master’s thesis and supported the Surgical-Fiberlock technology project from its early stages.

Sebastian Arevalo

Head of Quality
Sebastian leads ZuriMED's quality and regulatory compliance department. Backed by more than six years of experience in Medtech and a certification as a lead auditor, Sebastian is instrumental in ensuring that all compliance measures and quality standards are met, upholding and advancing the company's commitment to quality, compliance, and continuous improvement.

Ronja Senn

Head of Marketing and Sales
After completing her Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering at ETH Zurich, Ronja joined our company in 2021 for her thesis. Starting as an RA/R&D Project Manager, she delved into the pre-market aspects of medical device development. Transitioning into the marketing and sales department, she gained a comprehensive understanding of the entire device lifecycle. Now, as Head of Marketing & Sales, Ronja navigates the commercialization pathway of ZuriMED's products alongside her team.

Catherine Trojer Marcelo

Head of Finance
Catherine, as the Head of Finance at ZuriMED, is an experienced professional with a Master's degree in Management and extensive experience in the banking industry. Committed to continuous growth, she is currently pursuing further education to become a certified fiduciary. Catherine's leadership ensures financial stability and growth, aligning management practices with organizational objectives.

Mariano Perez Chaher

Supplier Quality Engineer
Since joining in 2022 as an MSc graduate in Industrial Engineering from the University of Groningen, Mariano has become an indispensable member of our team. As Supplier Quality Engineer he ensures product traceability throughout the supply chain, and establishes rigorous procedures to ensure the high quality of our products.

Ricardo Ribeiro

Quality Engineer
Ricardo is a dedicated individual holding an MSc in Health Sciences and Technology from ETH Zürich. As a Quality Engineer at ZuriMED, he maintains high standards within the Quality Management System and Product Development through diligent attention to detail and critical thinking, ensuring compliance with regulations and fostering continuous improvement.

Esteban Doig Cramer

R&D Engineer
Esteban was born and raised in Berlin, before pursuing his studies at ETH Zurich in Mechanical Engineering. Academic projects focusing on engineering for health led to his placement at ZuriMED, starting in fall 2022. He develops medical devices with a strong engineering background, contributes to IP and regulatory proceedings.

Carlota Sole Escobar

R&D Engineer
Carlota, a member of ZuriMED’s engineering team, earned her Masters in Biomedical Engineering from Imperial College London, with her Masters project focusing on surgical instrument design for knee arthroplasty. With previous experience at Stryker Sports Medicine, she contributes significantly to the design and development of ZuriMED’s product pipeline, while also engaging in its business development initiatives.

Esteban Ongini

R&D Project Manager
Esteban oversees the end-to-end development of spine medical devices, ensuring adherence to quality standards and regulations. Holding degrees in biomedical engineering from Georgia Tech and ETH Zürich, along with experience in product development and research in orthopedic biomechanics, his expertise positions him as an exceptional R&D project manager.

Janick Eglauf

Market Development Manager
Janick holds a Master‘s Degree in Health Sciences and Technology from ETH Zürich. With previous experience in academia and a biotechnology startup, he has acquired expertise in tissue and biomedical engineering as well as bioprocess optimization. At ZuriMED he works on enabling the market entry for the FiberLocker® Technology and frequently supports R&D projects.

Dominic Spothelfer

R&D Engineer
Dominic, an R&D engineer, holds a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from McGill University in Canada and a Master of Science in Robotics, Systems, and Control from ETH Zurich. His passion lies in applying his fundamental engineering knowledge to developing innovative medical devices. Currently, Dominic is developing active devices for ZuriMED.

Cornelius Schlegel

R&D Engineer
Cornelius, an M.Sc. graduate in Medical Engineering from the University of Stuttgart, brings practical experience from software development at KLS Martin Group and laboratory automation at Fraunhofer IPA. At ZuriMED Technologies AG, he contributes as an R&D engineer, specializing in nonwoven development.

Simon Schnydrig

Senior R&D Project Manager
Simon is responsible for the development of the required instrumentation of a new implant system reducing the risk of a reherniation after a discectomy. As a material scientist and biomechanical engineer from education, previously he worked as a development engineer for dental implants and instruments at Straumann AG.

Olivia Baumberger

R&D Intern
Olivia strives to finish her Master’s of Science ETH in Health Science and Technology with the major in Medical Technology in the next few months. She completed her Master Thesis at the Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory last year and joined ZuriMED recently for an internship. Currently, she works for our R&D and Marketing team.

Blorenta Murseli

Finance Intern
Blorenta, a member of ZuriMED's Finance team, leverages expertise as a Master of Science in International Financial Management to drive financial analysis and business development. With her previous experience in finance within the energy industry, she brings valuable insights to her role. Eager to collaborate and contribute to the team's success, Blorenta embodies dedication and proficiency in her role.

2023 | ZuriMED closes Series-A financing round & receives Innosuisse Swiss Accelerator Grant

The financing round was led by Chindex Medical Limited (Hong Kong), followed by Yellowstone Holding AG (Geneva) and a group of private investors that includes leading orthopaedic surgeons from Switzerland, Germany, France, and the United States. An additional non-diluting funding from Innosuisse will greatly expedite the development and regulatory registration process of a second clinical indication.

2022 | ZuriMED obtains Innosuisse Scale-up Award & Innosuisse Project Grant

Thanks to this award, ZuriMED can access the second phase of the Scale-up Coaching program to further accelerate the growth in Switzerland and the expansion into new global markets. The Project Grant supports the co-development with research partner University Hospital Balgrist on ZuriMED’s breakthrough technology for soft tissue repair.

2021 | ISO 13485 certificate obtained & First-in-man-study finished

ZuriMED gets ISO 13485 certified by BSI and the clinical trial run by the Balgrist University Hospital with 56 patients from July 2017 to June 2021, showing safety of the investigated device, has been completed.

2020 | ZuriMED closes a license deal with an international medical device company

One of ZuriMED’s endocortical fixation technologies for soft tissue repair has been licensed to an international medical device company. A strategic partnership has been established to work together to bring this technology to clinical applications.

2019 | ZuriMED obtains the Innosuisse Certificate

The company has now obtained the Innosuisse certificate in recognition for the potential of its technology and solutions. The role of Innosuisse – the Swiss Innovation Agency – is to promote science-based innovation in the interests of industry and society in Switzerland.

2018 | Capital increase – loan conversion executed

Loan conversion of the seed round investment into equity.

2017 | Start of Innosuisse funded First-in-man study

Clinical trial on ZuriMED’s first product, the BTB-Converter™ was approved by Swissethics and sponsored by Innosuisse (formerly Commission for Technology and Innovation in Switzerland [CTI]).

2016 | Seed round investment received

Investment in terms of convertible loan. ZuriMED moves into the newly opened Balgrist Campus.

2015 | Incorporation of ZuriMED Technologies AG

Winner of Venture Kick Final, Switzerland’s largest start-up acceleration program. Presenting 2nd best business plan by >>venture>>, the leading competition for entrepreneurs in Switzerland, a joint initiative of ETH Zurich, McKinsey & Company, Knecht Holding, Innosuisse and EPFL.
